Scifest@School 2016
Our Scifest@School took place in the Tullamore Court Hotel on Thursday, 3rd March. This year there were 47 projects from 94 students in the school taking part. The top 20 projects will go forward to represent the school at the Scifest Regional final in AIT in April. Judging was by external judges.
A big thank you to the judges in advance for giving up their free time to judge the projects, also thanks to the parents who turned up to support the students on the day. Well done to our science teachers Ms Flynn, Ms Howlin, Ms Browne and Ms Greaney who made it all happen.
Well done to all students who presented on the day. (Mar 2016)

Exciting Science Week 2015 at Tullamore College
Science week took place this year from 6th to 13th November. It kicked started in the school with a very exciting “science for fun” program, organised by transition year students for local 6th class students. Experiments ranged from popping balloons to setting bubbles on fire! This annual event was one of the most successful to-date, with some great feedback coming in from the pupils who took part. Well done to the TY class.
This was followed on Tuesday by the lunch time lab where students were invited to the lab during lunch time where TY students had set up a number of different experiments. On Tuesday afternoon, TYs and 5th year science students were invited to a talk by Dr Eddie from Operation Transformation.
During lunch time on Wednesday, students took part in the Science Week Challenge where this year they had to build a structure out of straws to hold a marble. There was a fantastic turn out and the buzz could be felt when students were trying to build the perfect structure! Well done to all who got involved. The winners were 1st place: Greta Baskyte, Laragh Mc Darby and Jacob Beatty. 2nd Place: Nikita Sapovals, Tristan Berrill and Armenos Kuzmenko and 3rd Place: Tony Moran, Cian Mc Dermott, Cian O’Mahony

There was a senior science quiz held in the canteen on Wednesday morning. The winners were 1st place Dominque Wozniak, Cyan Mc Cann, Jordan Murphy and Saima Pahk, 2nd Place Emily Deverell, Amy Brown, Ava Mc Grath and Ava Bolger
That evening 3 leaving cert students, Finian Carton, Gavin Mooney and Clodagh Baker went to A.I.T. to take part in the annual I.S.T.A. quiz.
Science bingo was held on the last and final day of science week for juniors.
The first year students combined their Art and Science skills by designing science week posters themed ‘Design for the future’. The winners include, 1st prize Reignard Albano, 2nd prize michelle Gorman and 3rd prize Aoife Redmond7

Tullamore College's SciFest@School 2015
Thursday, March 12th, was an important date in the science calendar for Tullamore College. It was the day over 70 students, along with their teachers, had been preparing for for weeks! SciFest@School was here at last! To make the day even more special we were joined by 5th and 6th class pupils from Durrow NS who competed in a primary section of the event. SciFest@School saw over 70 of our students from 1st to 5th year experimenting, designing and investigating - culminating in 36 projects in total ranging from farm safety devices, to teeth whitening to, the physics of paper airplanes!
The event was held in the Tullamore Court Hotel, where the students were put through their paces by a team of esteemed judges, including Mr George Porter, co-founder of SciFest. Along with selecting the winners from each category on the day the judges were also given the difficult task of selecting the best 24 projects to represent Tullamore College in SciFest@College in A.I.T on April 29th.
Congratulations to everyone who took part from both Durrow NS and Tullamore College. The winners on the day were as follows:
Primary Science: Ellen Reilly and Lara Henshaw
1st year - Luke Carson
2nd year - (Joint first) Reigna Albano and Megan Tuite
Deividas MurKunas
TY - Ciannait Goulding and Emily Deverell
5th year - Anna Warno and Zusanna Przybysz
The Tullamore College students involved in the 24 selected projects are already working on making their projects even better for A.I.T and we wish them the very best of luck!
Thank you to Mr Frank Kelly, principal of Durrow NS for his school's participation on the day. The standard of projects presented by his pupils was outstanding. We are hoping to expand the primary school section next year so those of you in primary school get your thinking caps on!
A special word of thanks to Dr Andy Fogarty, Ms Camille King, Ms Lynda Tynan, Ms Leeanne Hinch, Mr Roddy Shaw, Mr Joe Gallagher and Ms Helen Wilson who so willingly gave up their time to step into the role of judges, with such professionalism and enthusiasm. (Pictures of the day to follow soon) (March 2015)
Science Week 2014
"science for fun" video showing activities where our transition year students set up experiments for 6th class students.
National Science week 2014 was from the 9-16th of November. We ran a host of events throughout the week to promote "The Power of Science". The science department held its annual "science for fun" activities where our transition year students set up experiments for 6th class students. There were a number of other activities during the week including:
Monday - Science for Fun with our brilliant TY's inspiring the students from local primary schools to be budding scientists.
Tuesday - Balloon Powered Car Races. 2nd year students were invited to design a car made from recycled materials that can only be powered by the air in a balloon! Prize for the most creative design and the victorious car in our prestigious race!
Wednesday - Senior science students were invited to a workshop on materials science.
This workshop featured talks about materials science and the type of research they are doing as well as demonstrations of some of the products of the future.
Wednesday - demonstrats our most entertaining experiements!
Thursday - Senior Science Quiz
