Junior Certificate Business Studies

JUNIOR CERTIFICATE BUSINESS STUDIES COURSE
Business Studies is that part of the Junior Certificate Programme which:
·         Enables students to make informed decisions in the Business of Living
·         Gives students an understanding of the World of Business
·         Encourages students to develop a positive attitude to Enterprise
The syllabus consists of 4 sections
Business of Living deals with the management of personal finances which gives the student an important life skill
Economic Awareness which provides s students with economic literacy and an understanding of how the economy works
Enterprise which introduces students to the World of Business and fosters an entrepreneurial spirit
Information and Communication Technology which introduces students to modern uses of ICT in business and in the home
 
HOW WILL STUDENT BENEFIT FROM STUDYING BUSINESS STUDIES?
1.         They will learn about
  • Forms of Income and gain understanding of Payslips, PAYE and PRSI
  • Being a wise consumer, consumer rights and legislation
  • The World of Work and Industrial Relations
  • How the Irish Economy works
  • Services to Business – Banking, Insurance, Advertising and Transport
  • Information and Communication Technologies

   

2.         They will gain skills in
  • Budgeting and Personal Finance
  • Communication – Investigation, Report and Letter writing
  • Research Methods- collecting and analyzing information
  • Filing and Record Keeping for Clubs, Farms and Businesses
  • Computational and problem solving

            

3.         They will have a foundation for Accounting and Business at Senior Level
  
 HOW CAN PARENTS/GUARDIANS HELP THEIR CHILDREN WITH BUSINESS STUDIES?
As the topics are so relevant to everyday life, parents/guardians can:
·         Discuss  topics such as household costs with their children – ESB, phone, fuel, car
·         Involve them in household shopping – to become wise consumers
·         Encourage them to keep a record of their pocket money and expenditure
·         Assist them in opening and operating a savings account
