Leaving Certificate Accounting

Accounting is a business studies option within the established Leaving Certificate Programme.
Accounting is the reporting of financial information about an organisation that can be used by interested parties to help them assess its financial position and plan for the future.
The subject has a dual role in education in that it has both practical and theoretical aspects which are interlinked throughout the syllabus.
It is a form of communication with specific language and techniques which equips students for many areas of everyday financial, business and community life.
   
The study of Accounting:
Provides an understanding of the use of accounts in business
Develops an understanding of the role of accountants and auditors in business
Develops the accounting skills used for profit and nonprofit making organisations
Explores the stages involved in preparing a complete set of accounts for organisations
Develops an awareness of the legal and regulatory framework of accounting
 
The syllabus consists of 3 main sections:
Framework of Accounting which outlines the objectives of financial recording; the accounting concepts, bases and policies; the role of regulatory bodies and the users of financial information.
Financial Accounting where students prepare and analyse business, club, farm and service accounts.
Management Accounting where students prepare budgeting and costing statements for future business planning and budgetary control.
